Success to the British Colonies Pewter Flagon c1788

A rare & large English George III period pewter flagon, for wine or beer. The inside of the base stamped with the pewterer’s brand for Stephen Maxwell of Glasgow (active 1763-1795). The brand with a three masted sailing ship surrounded by the motto Success to the British Colonies. Celebrating the expansion of British trading & political interests in India (1757- ), America (1607-) Canada(1763-) & Australia (1788-). Given the maker was most active at the time of the establishment of a British Colony in Australia,  it is likely this large marriage flagon was made c1788 in celebration of this. Excellent fine wear, patina & watertight. Engraved with initials HPH  & MMcM
