Arcadian Painted Tin Tray c1830

A beautifully painted, gilded & ‘japanned’ tin tray, of shaped oval form. The central oval finely painted in oils of an idyllic rural scene with figures beside an ancient bridge.  The convex border with rolled edge forming a strong handle, decorated with gilding on a red painted ground. Excellent original decorative condition.. 77cm x 62cm x 5cm  UK. c1830.

Old label verso “Hand painted tray, formerly in the Gritton Collection. Mr Gritton was in charge of The Mint which closed in 1926”.  [Henry Bertie Gritton 1872 -1938 was Chief Assay Master & Deputy of The Mint, Sydney. At his  death his estate was  £35,687, establishing a chemical engineering research scholarship at the University of Sydney, which continues to the day, with an annual stipend to the recipient of $37,000 p.a  What a wonderful citizen).
