Pair of Argand Reading Lamps c1820

A rare pair of Argand lamps c 1815 in cast bronze of extraordinary form, in the Roman Revival taste as promoted by Thomas Hope.  For burning whale or colza oil, they are in the form of Roman cruzie oil lamps, suported on triform bases, with lion paw feet & winged harpies, the sides of the burners with winged grotesque theatrical masks, the handles  serpents. Good colour & condition. Reasonably attributed to the specialist bronze caster & lamp maker James DeVille of London (1777-1846). Ht 42cm x 39cm W x 19cm D.

A wonderfully plump Tasmanian Huon pine farmhouse bed, with exuberantly scrolled Thomas Hope back & generously turned Huon pine posts. Rich original finish & good colour. With new steel frame base making a modern English double 135 x 190cm x 122 High. This is the nicest example so far seen of this model. Tasmanian c 1840-1850.

An enigmatic & well painted late Victorian period watercolour of a Tasmanian Colonial period house. With glazed conservatory to the right & serpent end garden bench in front. The house with unusual lancet top gothic glazing to the first floor, timber trellis verandah & external Holland blinds to the French door. Signed E.W.R 1892. The house & artist are unknown. The house possibly still in existence, altered.The combination of windows & trelliage is found in houses of Northern Tasmania. Late 19th century wide  Huon pine frame. Image 270mm x 185mm. A rare and really useful Tasmanian Colonial period Huon pine corner cabinet, in two parts. With finely moulded removeable pediment, the carcass in two sections. The huon door panels screwed on to prevent warping. The backboards single slabs of Kauri pine. Untouched original condition & metalware.

A rare pair of  patent  Argand lamps, the bases with heavy lion paw feet and masks of Bacchus, for burning whale or colza oil, by the leading maker of the day, Thomas Messenger. Cast signature to bases ‘Published as The Act Directs, Messenger & Sons, London & Birmingham’. New English National Trust issue ground & polished glass Argand flask shades.  Height each 53cm x width 35cm x  23cm deep.

A textbook example of an early nineteenth century hoop  & fret back ‘Windsor’ elbow chair. The seat form of a slab of highly figured elm,the hoops, fret, legs and stretchers in turned & bent beech. With the most marvellous patina & evidence of wear over 200 years. Nice old blacksmith tightening repairs. 92cm H x 50cm W x 47cm D.
