A rare Anglo Cantonese ‘Japanned lacquer’ lady’s sewing / dressing / writing cabinet with ivory fittings. Canton c 1840.
For much of its life, this cabinet belonged to Suffrage era feminist Florence Mary Parker (1872 – 1966). A political & social activist, Florence was a grand daughter of George Davies founder of the Hobart Mercury newspaper. It comes with a large secret drawer of Florence’s photos, writings, watercolours, plus her invitation to the opening of the first Federation of Parliament, Melbourne, 1901
