David Hare was born in Scotland in 1775, movingto India in 1800, making a fortune as a watch maker & silversmith. Trade directories indicating he ceased work as a silversmith by 1819 .
An identical pair of muffineers are in the collection of Old Government House, Parramatta, NSW, & illustrated in Dr James Broadbent’s India, China, Australia: Trade & Society 1788 – 1850
David Hare prospered in his business, devoting his new fortune to the deplorable conditions of the native population. He was no missionary, seeking to convert others to his religion. He lived his own life and allowed others to live their own, only helping to improve their condition.
Hare was instrumental in establishing Hindu College, Kolkata & the School Book Society in 1817, publishing text books in both English and Bengali. This society contributed substantially to the flowering of the Bengal Renaissance.
In 1818, he established the Calcutta School Society, working tirelessly to establish schools to teach in English and Bengali. David Hare was a fierce defender & supporter of the Ladies’ Society for Native Female Education.
He was attacked by cholera & died on 1 June 1842. The Christian missionaries refused to allot him land in their cemeteries, regarding him a non-believer. He was buried by the distraut locals in a tomb with a life size monument, covered annually on his birthday with flowers.
