A superb quality English George III period gilded and painted card portrait silhouette by Mrs Isabella Beetham, with inscription verso, in original gilt brass oval frame and convex glass.
Mrs Isabella Beetham (1750 – 1825) was the leading female silhouette artist of the Georgian period and a female business woman of the age of enlightenment. From a wealthy family, Isabella eloped with actor Edward Beetham and dropped a social notch to love and to become an artist. She studied under miniaturist John Smart & practiced from Fleet St, London, centre of the publishing industry. Her work is in the Metropolitan Museum, New York and Victoria & Albert Museum, London. This is a good example of her work.
