A rare Tasmanian early Colonial period chimneypiece in classical revival taste, made of Australian cedar & Tasmanian blackwood. The free-standing columns in the Tuscan order. Old burn marks to base that would be easily scarfe repaired. Hobart c1830-40.

The archives office of Tasmania contains Public Works Department drawings by the Anglo Irish civil architect & engineer, John Lee Archer (1791 – 1852), active Tasmania 1827 -1838, of near identical form, supplied to, and still in, The Parsonage, St John’s, New Town (1835). It is nearly 20 years since the last columned example, such as this has appeared. It is not known the house this example was originally made for.
