Tasmanian (and Australian) pottery was hugely influenced by the arrival & teaching of Shigeo Shiga (1928-2011). Shiga was trained at the Kyoto Ceramic Institute. He came to Australia at the invitation of potter Les Blakeborough in 1966, and Tasmania in 1971. These ceramics reflect a return to the local clays and endemic plants, their forms a quantum shock to the local design language & role of the potter of the day.
