On 7 January 1852 the American whaler South Carolina arrived at Hobart in distress and was condemned and sold at Hobart. The hulked vessel was eventually moored at Risdon Cove, where two families lived onboard. During the 1860s it reportedly parted from its moorings and drifted ashore and was never relocated. Shipwreck Register closed in 1868 with the information that it had been broken up, however this image proves that it survived for some years after, a relic of the busy days when Hobart was the capital of the South Sea Whale Fishery.
