An exceptionally rare Anglo-Cantonese Bride Portrait c 1825, contained in the original carved camphor frame. Oils on fine linen.
The making of ‘European’ art for export was facilitated at the Chinese trading port of Canton from c 1760 – 1855. The works produced were neither fully Western or Chinese – painted on fine linen with oils, by generally anonymous Chinese artists for export , with limited depth of field and fine expressions of textiles and faces. High quality, standard subjects included Chinese tea drinkers, gardens, The Treaty Ports of the Pearl River, Pagodas and Pleasure Boats. The making of a commissioned portrait of a Chinese bride, possibly the bride of a Chinese merchant, sea Captain or Western trading Supercargo, for a non Chinese audience is very rare. This portrait, with its fine handling of veil, collar, oval face & jewellery may reasonably be attributed to the Canton portrait artist Lamqua (Chinese1801-1860). Image size 59cm H x 45cm.W. Framed size. 72.5cm.x 57cm W.
