Schinkel visited the UK in 1826 to study British industry & production technology.
The design for this fruit dish was first produced about 1820 for the Prussian Royal Foundry and manufactured at the Berlin Ironworks. It uses the same frieze of hippocamps and mermen that appears on the iron balustrade for the Schlossbrücke in Berlin (1819-24).
