An exciting example of an 18th century mahogany bureau bookcase c 1780. Beautifully proportioned & sporting the original acanthus enriched cast brass swan neck handles, the drawers fully lined in mahogany. With fine cavetto moulded pediment, over a pair of astragal glazed doors. The interior with mahogany grooves for the mahogany faced shelves, all with original pink wash interior. The bureau base with beautifully figured best Spanish mahogany fall, original four pinned brass lock & typically simple,  high quality fitted interior of drawers & ink / quill compartment. Over four graduated drawers -entirely of best mahogany. On the original bracket feet, the backs of the feet with laminated pine blocks & pink wash to the backings etc

Attributed to the workshop of Thomas Chippendale (1718 – 1779),  the leading maker of 18th century English furniture. With considerable research conducted by the English Furniture History Society, timing to the 300th anniversary of Chippendale’s birth in 2018, examination of  many of the commissions of documented furniture from his workshop, allowed a better understanding of his high quality, unique materials & construction techniques. Operating a workshop for over twenty years, employing up to sixty artisans, a large volume of work was produced. This bureau has the same original handles as other documented examples, as  the bureau interior, ink drawer, fine small handles to interior, full mahogany lining of drawers, laminated glue blocks to the bracket feet & pink wash. It has an exceptional colour & patina & has not been repolished. 225cm H x 110cm W x 63cm D.
